Description
I listed this in the British WW2 category because this unit was likely used by the British during WW2 to block the radio navigation signals of German bombers during a period known as the "Battle of the Beams". I say this because this unit was found with a large, prolific collection of military items so it is almost certainly military related. I think I see a date of purchase of 1936 on the included paperwork which would put it right in the time something like this was used. Here is an excerpt of how it was used early on in the war:"The Battle of the Beams was a period early in the Second World War when bombers of the German Air Force (Luftwaffe) used a number of increasingly accurate systems of radio navigation for night bombing in the United Kingdom. British scientific intelligence at the Air Ministry fought back with a variety of their own increasingly effective means, involving jamming and deception signals. The period ended when the Wehrmacht moved their forces to the East in May 1941, in preparation for the attack on the Soviet Union."
"Efforts to block the Knickebein headache were codenamed "Aspirin". Initially, modified medical diathermy sets transmitted interference. Later, local radio transmitters broadcast an extra "dot signal" at low power on nights where raids were expected."
If someone with more expertise were able to determine that this unit has been modified for radio transmission it likely could be proven that this was used for this purpose.
A super rare item, literally at the cusp of modern electronic warfare.
Diathermy is described as deep heating beneath the skin, deep muscles, and joints for therapeutic purposes
