The southern counterpart to the famous northern dewberry (R. flagellaris). A delicious native dewberry which forms a trailing colony and produces loads of fruit. Stems are armed with many prickles make it also an effective barrier—many fruit are held high making for easier picking. Flowers on second year canes. Because canes touching the ground will root this shrub is aggressive in mixed plantings.
This shrub is found on the woods edge flowering and fruiting best in full sun but tolerant of part shade under tall trees in their dappled shade. In shade the stems tend to elongate making for a larger plant whereas in full sun the shrub is shorter—the amount of sunlight does not seem to substantially affect fruiting. In both instances the shrub has a mounded, pleasing shape.
