“Q. Lobata. VALLEY OAK, CALIFORNIA WHITE OAK. Deciduous tree. Zones 3b-9, 11-24. Native to interior valleys, Sierra foothills, and Coast Ranges away from direct coastal influence. California’s mightiest oak, often reaching 70ft. or taller with equal or greater spread. Massive trunk and limbs with thick, distinctly checkered gray bark. Straight and erect during first several decades of growth; more spreading with age. Limbs often picturesquely twisted; long, drooping outer branches sometimes sweep ground. Deeply cut, round-lobed leaves are 3-4 inches long, 2-3 in. wide; dark green above, paler beneath. Shiny, 1 1/2-2 1/2 in. acorns are conical, enclosed by one-third in warty, bowl-shaped cap. Possibly the largest North American oak, this species tolerates high heat and moderate alkalinity in its native range. Best in deep soils were it can tap ground water; in such situations, it can grow fast 2 ½-3 ft. a year). Magnificent tree for shading a big outdoor living area, though constant rain of debris will create a nuisance on any nearby planting areas or paved surfaces. This is the tree that gives much of California’s Central Valley the look of a giant park. Fortunately, it is apparently immune to sudden oak death.”
