    Description

Julius Caesar 49-48 BC Silver Denarius NGC AU Famous Elephant trampling Snake
    49-48 BC
ROMAN IMPERATORIAL. JULIUS CAESAR, 49-48 BC.
Silver Denarius, 3.88g., 18 mm., struck by a military mint traveling with Caesar.
Obv. Elephant to right, trampling a serpent.
Rev. Official instruments of the Pontifex Maximus.
NGC graded AU Strike 4/5, Surface 3/5, with a very attractively bright surfaces and a remarkable well centered strike.
The symbolism of the elephant trampling the snake is variously interpreted as either being an allegory of the victory of good over evil, or perhaps as a reference to Caesar's victories in Gaul (described in Caesar's Commentarii de Bello Gallico). A specimen of Museum quality, and one of the nicest on the market today.
