: Scarification or boiling water soak for 1 day then 30-90 days cold, moist stratification.
An interesting native tree known for its heavily armored young branches. The older bark has a knobby appearance. Tree is dioecious—produces only male or female flowers. Its bitter aromatic bark was used for toothaches—the bark or foliage produces numbness. A most unusual small native tree adaptable to much of the U.S. within in hardiness range.
