ESTATE FRESH!
Circa 1900 Men's Leather Suit Jacket Bill "Wallet" Inscribed W.F.W. (William Fiske Whitney?)!
I have been collecting/dealing in Antiques and Collectibles for well over 45 years. Most of the treasures that I acquire are direct from estates or houses. Over the time that I have been been doing this I have ended up setting aside items that were either of specific interest to me or that I felt were especially "unique and eclectic". This has ended up with my having a rather extensive "personal" collection. I am now at a point in my life that I have to limit this addiction and in fact actually downsize my "collection(s)!" I suggest that you consider adding me to your list of sellers that you follow as I will be offering many "decommissioned" treasures as well as the extensive new acquisitions that I continue to pursue in my semi-retirement!
This is a very high quality men's leather Bill Carrier "Wallet", approximately 3 3/4" x 7". It includes a matching approximate 2 3/8" x 3 7/8" calling card holder. The wallet is ornately inscribed with the initials "WFW." It is my belief that these stood for William Fiske Whitney based on the estate that it came out of.
William Fiske Whitney (1850-1921) was an American anatomist, curator, and pathologist. He specialized in anatomy becoming one of the top experts in the USA.
I am unable to guarantee that this piece was indeed owned by William Fiske Whitney. However, I do suspect that it was based on the family history of the estate that it came out of.
There is a slight discoloration on approximately 1" depth from the top. This discoloration is only on the front leading me to believe that it is the result of use. This is the area that would be exposed while sitting in the inner suit jacket pocket!
