Description
You are bidding on an unusualCopper Medallion or Plaque for Phi Sigma
in lightly cleaned, as found condition.
Extremely unusual and rare antique heavy copper plaque with the Greek letters ϕ Σ which, together, signify "Fellows in Science"
Phi Sigma Coat of Arms is highly detailed, intricately embossed design with skull and crossbones above a steaming cauldron. A half-circle of 12 skulls is displayed oriented toward the cauldron.
This could have been part of a fraternity building, a column or pillar, or other architectural use. An exceptional piece of historic Greek art.
Measures approx 5 3/4" across the bottom, 5" across the top, and 6 7/8" high. Approx 3/8" deep. Weighs a heavy 1 pound 10 oz.
Excellent condition. It has a nice rich patina with hints of verdigris on the back. It has not been polished as the patina is so nice. No cracks or breaks. A very small ding on one back corner that is not visible when displayed.
This item was certainly not mass produced. Likely well over 100 years old. No apparent production / forge marks. Maker unknown.
Will be shipped boxed and very well protected.
