Description
Anatolian Chestnut, Sweet Chestnut Tree 25 Seeds (Castanea sativa)Anatolian chestnut (Castanea sativa) is a chestnut species in the family of beech (Fagaceae), native to southern Europe and Asia, 20-35 m in length and 2 m in diameter. It is a large tree with an irregular crown that occurs naturally on cool, somewhat humid mountain slopes in parts of Southern and Central Europe, North Africa and Asia. The crown can expand up to 25 m wide. The heavy, dwarf, dark gray body folds in its axis, taking up the deep cavities in its bark. Young branches are olive green but quickly turn reddish-brown. The elongated leaf is dark green and glossy and has a saw-toothed edge. Young leaves bear velvety hairs on the underside. It is a monoecious tree with white fragrant male flowers that form in bunches on the ears, up to 13 cm long. The female flowers are small and green and inconspicuous. The fruit is edible. The tree leaves a deep and widespread root system. Castanea sativa is an important source of timber.
