This coin commemorates Octavian's decisive naval victory over Mark Antony near Actium on the west coast of Greece on September 2, 31 BC. This battle was provoked by Antony, who is said to have been persuaded by his lover, Queen Cleopatra of Egypt, to retire to her land  and to make this naval battle to mask his retreat. Antony was soundly defeated and did retreat to Egypt where both he and Cleopatra eventually committed suicide. In 27 BC the Roman Senate granted Octavian the name Augustus, meaning "The Exalted". They also gave him the legal power to rule with the Senate as an advisory body, effectively ending the Roman Republic. Augustus Caesar became the first Emperor of Rome.
This interesting historic coin was purchased for my personal collection from Frascatius Ancient Coins (coupon will accompany the coin). I have enjoyed owning it.
