    Product description
    :
If you like rare and unusual indoor flowers, then you may be interested in Nepenthes. More often it is called a predator flower, a pitcher, a flycatcher. You are unlikely to find a more exotic and original houseplant, besides insectivorous. Sometimes it seems that this is not a flower at all, but some kind of predatory living creature that, in addition to the usual food for flowers, eats insects, which it digests as food in its pitcher traps.
Nepenthes is a plant of the genus belonging to the monotypic Nepenthes family (Nepenthaceae). It has more than 100 species of predator plants and their natural hybrids. The name comes from the word "nepenfa", which in ancient Greek mythology meant "grass of oblivion". Nepenthes is popularly called simply – a pitcher or a Flycatcher.
In the wild, the pitcher grows in the forests of the tropical part of Asia and on the islands of the Pacific basin. The flower is most often found on the island of Kalimantan, in the Seychelles and Madagascar, in New Caledonia and Northern Australia. Moreover, some species of these predator plants lurked on the green plains, others settled high in the mountains, and others like peat bogs and wetlands. Many Nepenthes species settle on trees. With their long herbaceous stems, they climb branches and trunks to an unprecedented height in search of sunlight for their inflorescences. It happens that plants lose their connection with the earth without receiving any nutrients from their neighbors, that is, they are essentially epiphytes. Here they are simply forced to eat insects in order to survive.
With some representatives of the animal world, the plant has strong symbiotic ties. For example, mountain tupayas use Nepenthes with large pitcher traps as toilets. They feast on the nectar of the plant and leave their droppings in pitchers, which the plant then digests and assimilates as nitrogen fertilizer. Bats often climb into large pitchers to sleep, where they are not bothered by heat and insects. They also leave their excrement containing the nitrogen needed by the plant in the trap.
This perennial plant is found most often in the form of herbaceous semi-shrubby lianas or in the form of shrubby epiphytes. Thin, herbaceous stems eventually become woody. If the plant settles next to tall trees, then its shoots can grow tens of meters in height. At home, the height of the Nepenthes does not exceed one and a half meters, more often it is 60 – 90 cm. The leaves of the Pitcher are regular, large, with a convex median vein and a pulled tip. They are elongated, bright green or yellow-green in color. The leaves reach 30 cm in length . In addition to the usual leaves, others develop on the flower, which play the role of digestive organs in Nepenthes. In these leaves, the lower part of the petiole, connecting with the stem, is wide and flat. The tip of the leaf is transformed into a thin tendril that wraps around the branch.
At the end of the tendril, a pitcher appears, similar to an unusual flower. This is an insect trap. It can be from 3 to 30 cm in length, but there are also Nepenthes with huge jugs – up to half a meter in length. The traps have lids to protect the inside of the jug from rainwater and any debris.
Depending on the type of plant, the pitchers have different colors, but always bright and attractive: matte white, red, orange, yellow, light green, with stripes and spots. The upper edge of the jug is bent inward and covered with pink or purple furrows. It looks like a thick brush because of the small hard bristles located on it. Sweet nectar is produced there. The inner walls of the trap are smooth. 1/3 of the jug is filled with a special viscous digestive fluid that contains the enzyme nepenthesin. This liquid resembles human gastric juice. Attracted by the aroma of Nepenthes nectar, insects fly in or crawl under the lid of the trap, slip into the digestive fluid and drown in it. After 5 to 8 hours, nothing remains of them – only the chitinous shell. Occasionally, even small birds, frogs and rodents get into large jugs. Thus, the plant receives all the micro- and macroelements it needs for its vital activity.
The Flycatcher grows like a bud. As it grows, it swells from the inside, stretches out. When a certain age is reached, it becomes like a narrow thin-walled jug or glass, and a lid with a lever opens in its upper part. The neck of the pitcher, the peristome, can be smooth or corrugated, similar to a wide collar or a toothed comb. Some types of Nepenthes have a distinctive feature – on the outside of the pitcher there are serrated wings from the base to the upper edge, which serve for support and as guides for crawling insects, luring them into a trap.
Each pitcher stays on the plant for quite a long time, from 2 to 4 months, and the flowering of the whole plant can last up to 8 months. Before the onset of winter, the pitchers dry up and fall off. The plant seems to be resting – it eats and drinks less, stops growing. With the arrival of spring, it comes to life again, and the pitchers grow back.
In addition to the original pitchers, which many people take for flowers, Nepenthes periodically forms real racemose or paniculate apical inflorescences. In the axils of the leaves, small petalless flowers with three or four tiled sepals bloom, collected in reddish-brown erect inflorescences. They bloom for quite a long time – sometimes up to six months. You can't call them spectacular, but their unusual nature attracts. After flowering, fruits are formed – leathery boxes with green partitions inside. In each chamber, small cylindrical seeds ripen in rows.
It should be remembered that Nepenthes is a dioecious plant. Only male flowers bloom on some plants, and only female flowers bloom on others. In the wild, pollination occurs by billions of insects, there is no problem with seeds. At home, flowering occurs quite rarely. And both Nepenthes specimens — both male and female - should bloom in your collection at the same time. In addition to everything else, pollinating insects are needed, which you certainly will not tolerate in your house. So getting a ripe Nepenthes fruit at home, and even your seeds, is a big problem.
In the flower growers' reference books, you can read that a Pitcher will not live more than a year and a half at home. But many growers claim that with proper care, he can live much longer. There were instances that lived for more than three years.
Using an individual approach to the cultivation of this tropical predator, investing your attention and care in this difficult task, perhaps it is you who will be able to tame it, and your Nepenthes will be the first indoor insectivorous long–lived flower.
    Instructions for planting and care:
In indoor floriculture, the Flycatcher is not often found yet, since almost all of its species are very demanding of maintenance and are too large even for small greenhouses. But, all the same, he enjoys popularity among exotic lovers: the presence of an original insectivorous plant in the home collection attracts many. At home, mainly dwarf Pitcher hybrids are grown, obtained from shrubby epiphytes with small pitchers.
    Flower Locations
If you put a pot of Nepenthes just on the windowsill, then with all the effort it will not turn out to be a pitcher. Most likely, you will have an exotic bush with abundant foliage growing rapidly. In order for hanging pitcher traps to appear on the plant, it is necessary to create special conditions for it. Windows are better suited to the south-west or south-east direction. On the north side, the flower will grow poorly without additional powerful illumination, and on the south side it will have to be shaded from direct sunlight. We do not recommend turning the pot to the light in different directions. Knowledgeable growers even mark the side of the pot facing the light with a label and make sure that the pot is not turned to the sun with the other side. Otherwise, the Pitcher will stop creating new pitchers and stop its growth. If you still had to rearrange the pot, it will take at least two months until Nepenthes gets used to the new location and does not begin to develop again.
The flower does not tolerate drafts, but loves fresh air – keep this in mind when you ventilate the room. Nepenthes shoots that grow over time should be tied to supports. We recommend installing them immediately at the first transplant of a one-year-old plant.
    Humidity
Some types of Nepenthes grow normally and develop at the usual humidity of the home room of 50 — 60%. Ask about your pet's preferences when buying. But a larger number of Nepenthes need very high humidity, about 80% or more. Then it is necessary to use all available ways to increase humidity in a room with a flower. Humidifiers can be installed. You can put the pot in an open aquarium. You can put the pot in a tray with wet expanded clay at the bottom. You can arrange wide containers of water around the flower to evaporate moisture. If you have a bathroom with a window, then the jug can be placed on a light window sill in the bathroom. There you will be able to wet ceramic tiles on the walls and on the floor, moisture evaporation will noticeably increase the humidity surrounding the flower.
Spraying It is necessary to spray the plant and the air around it daily from a small spray bottle with distilled water at room temperature. Do not be afraid that water droplets will fall into the pitchers – they will not bring any harm to the plant. In the natural habitat, drops of tropical rain do not lead to dilution of the liquid inside the pitchers and do not worsen its digestive value. This, first of all. Secondly, insects are not the only source of food for indoor Nepenthes. Thirdly, some growers even recommend adding a little distilled water to the jugs so that their fullness is 2/3 of the volume. This will protect the pitchers from lethargy and drying.
It is much easier to maintain comfortable conditions for long-term residence of this flower in special florariums and terrariums. If you have the opportunity to purchase them, purchase them.
    Lighting
Nepenthes likes saturated diffused light for 14-16 hours a day. To ensure such a long daylight, especially in autumn and winter, powerful phyto lamps will be required. If the pot is on the windowsill, then let it be a south-western or south-eastern window with mandatory illumination from autumn to spring. If the flower does not have enough lighting, it may stop forming pitchers, and existing ones may dry up. If this happens in winter, it's okay. With the arrival of spring, the situation usually returns to normal.
    The temperature
of Low temperatures Nepenthes does not tolerate. The optimum temperature for it is in the range of 22 – 28 gr. in high light and humidity. It's summer. And in autumn and winter, the temperature can be slightly lowered, but not below 18-20 g. For some time, the flower can last at low temperatures, up to 16 gr., but it will not survive a prolonged decrease – it will get sick and die. It will also negatively affect the health of the flower and too high, up to 35 gr. temperature.
It is important to familiarize yourself with the specific features of your copy when purchasing it. If his parents grew up in lowlands and marshy areas, then your pet will feel comfortable in summer at a temperature no higher than 26 g., and in winter – 18-20 g. If your flower comes from rocky places, then in summer it will prefer a temperature no higher than 20 gr., and in winter – about 15 gr.
    Watering
For irrigation, rainwater or tap water at room temperature or slightly higher is used during the day. In summer, they are watered more often, once every two days, preferably in a pallet. After a while, the excess water is drained from the pan – the water should not stagnate there. Nepenthes does not tolerate prolonged waterlogging. But it is also not desirable to allow overdrying of the soil. We recommend every two to three weeks to immerse the pot with Nepenthes in a container with warm standing water until the soil is completely saturated (until the air bubbles stop coming out). After that, let the water drain and put the plant back in its original place. Water regularly and abundantly in the summer and moderately, once a week, in the autumn-winter period.
    Soil
A mixture of peat, sand, pine bark, charcoal and sphagnum moss is suitable for nepenthes. You can not plant a flower in ordinary garden soil, chernozem or clay. The substrate should be moderately fertile, loose, light and not acidic. This plant is an epiphyte, it receives nutrition not so much from the soil as from the air through the leaves and from organic substances that are obtained when it digests insects (flies, spiders, mosquitoes). Ready–made soil can be purchased in the store - a soil mixture for orchids or epiphytes is suitable, plus moss-sphagnum.
    Propagation by seeds
Planting should be carried out immediately in small containers with a mixture of moss-sphagnum and sand under the film. Cultivation takes place in a warm place at a temperature of 22 – 26 gr. Maintain high (up to 100%) humidity and illumination of the substrate. Shoots appear in two months.
Undoubtedly, a healthy, bright green Nepenthes bush, strewn with many amazing purple or crimson pitchers, will greatly decorate your home and amuse your guests during their meals. Put such a flower in your apartment. Perhaps you will be able to tame his difficult character, and he will delight you with his exotic appearance and aroma for a long time.
