1984 Vintage Cannondale SM500 All Terrain/Mountain Bike
Offered is a rare intact example of Cannondale’s first mountain bike from 1984, the first year it was produced. I believe this bike is all original, including the tires. The bike is fully functional and rideable, though the tires should be changed for safety. I am selling it because it is more of an off-road bike than I need now, and it should ideally be in the hands of a collector or enthusiast who appreciates it for its historic value. It is a large frame, so better for a tall rider.
"In 1984 Cannondale sold this first production mountain bike frame made entirely in large diameter aluminum tubing. They called it the SM500 for Sport Mountain. Cannondale pioneered several things with the SM500, a light alloy frame, fat frame tubes, a high 12” bottom bracket, and a sloping top tube. They also pioneered the configuration of a 24” rear and 26” front wheel. These bikes were fast, had a better fit than the available chrome-moly frames of the time, due a longer top tube…and are still fun today."
This is a first year, 1984 SM500, as indicated by a BB serial number. Features cartridge bearing Suntour bottom bracket and cartridge bearing Suntour hubs. And some other of the best components of the year, Nitto Bullmoose bars, Shimano XT Deer head, front cantilevers, shift and brake levers, and rear derailleur, and Suntour Le Tech front derailleur. Old school SR BMX stem.
