    Description
    : Annual
An excellent heavy cropping and reliable heirloom . Plants are tall, growing to 1.5 m tall with long pods containing 6-8 beans each. The beans are of excellent flavour and are best picked young and tender when the whole pod can be steamed and eaten. Alternatively they can be shelled like a pea and eaten raw. Older beans can be peeled to reveal the sweet inner seed. Sow closely to help plants self support, however in areas of strong winds staking or stringing is advised
Beans that become over large can be allowed to dry on the vine and saved for soups and stews.
Pinch out the growing tips (great in stir frys) when a good crop of pods has set to encourage pod development
    Planting time:
Broad beans are cool season vegetables; sow from Autumn - early Winter
    Sow:
direct where they are to grow, 3 times as deep as the seed diameter and 25 cm apart in blocks rather than rows.
    Harvest:
    18-22 weeks from sowing.
    Position:
    full sun
    Soil & feeding :
A rich loamy soil is best with added compost. Avoid  high nitrogen fertilisers, beans are nitrogen fixers and therefore more nitrogen will cause excessive foliage at the expense of the fruit. The plants will benefit from the addition of potash  at first flowering to increase fruit yields.
They like a neutral to slightly alkaline soil so add some lime at planting.
