Drill Bits By The Set Or By The Piece
In this post we are exploring standard jobber drills and determining whether it is best to purchase them in a set of different sizes or a packet of the same size.
Jobber drill bits are manufactured in many sizes. If you are producing the same component many times and need to drill the same size hole over and over again, you likely need to purchase drill bits by the packet. Chances are you will be looking for a popular size drill, such as a #7, because you are tapping 1/4-20 threads. Or perhaps you will need a 1/4” drill  because you are tapping a 1/16 -27 NPS pipe thread.
In my case, I am working on many different jobs in my workshop. So it is necessary that I own several sets of drills. I own both cobalt and high speed, number, letter, fractions and metric.
Drill bits cost less when you buy them in a set.
When you are ready to make a purchase, compare the price of a set of drills to the price of all the individual sizes sold separately, and you will discover that a set is much cheaper.
Manufacturers do not have the luxury of making only the best selling sizes. They have to make all the sizes so they are able to give customers a price break when selling a set .
The trick for manufactures is to match the production run to product demand. It takes the same amount of time to set up a machine whether you are running 100 pieces or 10,000 pieces.
Manufacturers have to make enough drill bits during a production run to make setting up the machines worthwhile. If they make smaller runs, they have to become very efficient at changing machinery over from one size to another.  To maximize efficiency, machines must be set up as quickly as possible.
In my manufacturing plant, we became very efficient at changing the machines over.  While a machine was producing one size, our technicians would prepare the next job. All of the tooling was staged on a tool cart so the change over could begin as soon as the lot was finished and the next size could be started right away. This preparation helped keep costs down and make smaller runs more acceptable.
