Once upon a time, this evergreen ornamental plant was called "wax ivy" because of its peculiar plaque. In its natural habitat – the tropical forests of Australia – it blooms beautifully and twists, entangling stunted young trees. Having migrated to countries with a cold climate, it is grown as a houseplant. Succulent has more than 200 species. Some of them are giants with a diverse palette of umbrella inflorescences, others are miniature creatures with barely noticeable, tiny flowers, as if created by the hands of a jeweler.
Hoya Carnosa, or hoya fleshy, is one of the representatives of the Kutrov family, which has beautiful, rather large leaves, with a characteristic waxy coating and fabulous umbrella inflorescences of 15-20 flowers. Each star-shaped flower is slightly lowered and can reach 20 mm in diameter.
From time to time, trembling droplets of nectar form on the flowers. Flowering lasts almost all summer, exuding a heady aroma (not all varieties). In indoor conditions, with proper care, hoya is able to form whips up to 3-5 m. It got its name in honor of the botanist T. Hoya.
Instructions for planting and care:
Propagation of vines by seeds:
prepare a nutrient substrate from turf soil, sand, humus and peat in a ratio of 2:1:1:1;
extract the seeds of the plant from the pods;
sprinkle the seeds with a thin layer on a sheet of paper and dry for 3 days in the shade;
put the seeds in a container with a substrate, leaving a distance of 2-3 cm between them;
sprinkle the seeds with a thin layer of soil and spray with warm water from a spray bottle.
Leave the container with the crops in a warm and well-lit place. After the formation of 3-4 real leaves, seedlings can be dived in separate containers.
Lighting
Hoya Carnosa is an extremely light–loving plant and feels great on the windows on the south side of the apartment. To avoid burns, it is better to shade it with a special mesh. Eastern and south-western windows are also suitable, but living on the north side, the plant is unlikely to bloom. Artificial lighting is allowed on short winter days. As soon as the hoya carnosa gathers buds, it is strictly forbidden to move it to another place, even turn it, otherwise you can remain without flowers.
Temperature regime
In the summer season, the favorable temperature for hoya in the house is up to 20-24 degrees above zero. When ventilating the room, you should pay attention to drafts, the plant does not like them. In the winter months, it withstands a drop in average temperature to +10 ℃.
Watering
Moderate watering 1 time a week in summer, 1 time every two weeks in winter. If the top layer has dried 2 cm deep, then the flower needs to be watered. Insufficient moisture leads to inhibition of flowering and slowing of growth. Stagnation of moisture leads to rotting of the root system, therefore, the liquid collected in the tray must always be poured out.
Air humidity
Hoya is a tropical plant, so additional moisture in the form of systematic irrigation will benefit it. This should be done with warm water, avoiding splashing on the inflorescences.
Top dressing
Top dressing is carried out only in summer 1 time in 2-3 weeks using complex fertilizers.
Period of rest
With a short light day and a decrease in temperature indicators to +12 ℃, the plant falls into a dormant period. It can be avoided by creating the necessary conditions, but this will inevitably lead to the fact that the capricious hoya will stop blooming in the spring and will not gain buds.
