100 BC ROMAN REPUBLIC Beautiful SILVER "DENARIUS" Minerva & VICTORY in a CHARIOT
    Description
This is a beautiful, silver Denarius from the ancient Roman Republic. It was struck in 100 BC by one of the
    “Triumvir Monetalis”
or three Moneyers appointed each year to strike coins. In this case it was Publius Servilius Marcus filius, or son of Marcus, Rullus. His coins and his name are all that is recorded about him.
100 BC was a watershed year in the history of the Republic. Two important things culminated this year. The first was the end of the dominance of Gaius Marius, the
    “First Man in Rome”
and the first in a string of Generals to effectively take over the state. The next would be Sulla, then Julius Caesar, who was born this year, and then finally Augustus, who turned it into an Empire. 100 BC was Gaius Marius’ unprecedented sixth Consulship.
    And then there was Saturninus…
    Saturninus was a
    "Quaestor"
in 104 BC, in charge of the grain at the port of Ostia. He was unfairly removed by the Senate and replaced by Marcus Aemilius Scaurus, a
    "Noble"
. In 103 he was elected
    "Tribune of the People"
and made a deal with the
    "Populist"
Gaius Marius, helping him get elected Consul again for the fourth time in 102 so Marius could lead the fight against the Germans.
Weight: 3.97 Gram, 19 Millimeter, Silver.

    Obverse:
The Roman Goddess Minerva or Athena to the Greeks, wearing a crested, Corinthian helmet and aegis or breastplate. • RVLLI behind.
In 102 Marius defeated the invading Germanic Teutones, and, elected Consul again in 101, defeated the other half of the invading Germans, the Cimbri. Returning to Rome, Marius was granted a Triumph and named by the grateful Senate as the
    "Third founder of Rome"
    . However, the
    "Nobles"
of the Senate made no provision for his soldiers and in reality, they would be glad to see the end of the
    "reign"
    of Marius.
In 100 BC, through bribery and assassination Marius was elected Consul again and Saturninus was once again elected Tribune. Saturninus passed laws granting land to the veterans. But then he went further, passing laws illegally and enforcing them by violence.
    Reverse:
The winged Goddess Victory holding a Palm branch and driving a fast Biga or two-horse chariot right. • Letter P for EX ARGENTO PVBLICO or
    “from the public silver”
    below. P. SERVILI M F in exergue.
The Senate now met and declared a
    "Senatus Consultum Ultimum"
or order to defend the State. Marius, wishing to distance himself from his now out of control former partner, was forced as Consul to act, and he arrested Saturninus and his followers and confined them in the Senate building. But the more impetuous members of the aristocratic party climbed onto the roof, stripped off the tiles, and stoned Saturninus and many others to death.
    The Coin:
A quite pleasant example. It passed through some ancient hands and earned a bit of honest wear, but no bankers' marks or other problems. Genuine, NOT a copy or reproduction,
    Real History
in your hands. As grading is subjective, please see the pictures and judge for yourself.
