Description;
Mahuca longifolia(Mee) is an Indian tropical tree found largely in the central and north Indian plains and forests. The fat (solid at ambient temperature) is used for the care of the skin, to manufacture soap or detergents, and as a vegetable butter. It can also be used as a fuel oil.The seed cakes obtained after extraction of oil constitute very good fertilizer.
The flowers are used to produce an alcoholic drink in tropical India ‘mahua’.The tree is considered a boon by the native tribes who are forest dwellers and keenly conserve this tree. In Sri Lanka this tree signified as cultural ecosystem helper where the tree will be infested with bats who eat the fruit defecate, which is a good form of fertilizer for the farmers who cultivate.
Can grow up to 20 meters in height. This has water retention ability and provide a good shade. Since the ancient times seed oil of Mee used for cooking, cosmetics, medicines and used for lamps. Several parts of the tree used for Ayurveda medicine.
The seeds are used to extract "mee thel" (oil), while the flowers are eaten and also used in herbal drinks. All parts of the tree are used in herbal medicinal preparations.
Medicinal Uses:
Mee oil is a good medicine to strengthen the nerves and to relieve conditions such as constipation. Mee oil is also used to treat eczema and rashes on the skin. In addition, seeds from the Mee tree are used in the treatment of skin diseases, headaches, and so on.
